Trying to explain complicated ideas to my son is not always easy. He doesn’t hear me at the best of times, so when I go into an explanation riddled with unfamiliar words and abstract ideas, he tends to zone out. I constantly seek help from the internet. I look for ways that I can explain things to him that he would most likely understand, and then I follow it up with a fun video that he can watch to comprehend the idea further.
When the topic of evolution came up, I stumbled across Stated Clearly. This is a YouTube channel that has short, clear and enjoyable animated videos that tackle evolution in detail. It helped me to explain the diversity of life to my son in such a way that he grasped it easily, and afterwards enjoyed watching the videos himself.
Stated Clearly was founded by Jon Perry, who noticed a disconnect between the way science is taught and the people who need to learn it. A passionate advocate for science, he sought to do something about it.
The mission statement for Stated Clearly is, from their website:
To promote the art of critical thinking by exposing people from all walks of life, to the simple beauty of science. We do this by taking complicated scientific topics such as “What is DNA and how does it work” and creating short, information rich animations that explain the topic in clear language.
A noble mission, and one they have tackled well so far. Here is the video I used to help explain evolution to my son:
When I first watched this, I couldn’t help but think these videos would come in pretty handy as well for those of you who find yourself debating the truth of evolution on Twitter. These videos make evolution more than accessible, hard to deny and an incredibly valuable resource for education.
